Trinamool Billboard Row: Abhishek Banerjee Arrives at Police Station for Questioning

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee appeared at the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in central Kolkata on Tuesday for questioning in connection with FIRs registered over the removal of an allegedly illegal billboard from the roof of his party office on Camac Street.

Banerjee arrived at the police station shortly after noon, where a large number of Trinamool Congress supporters had gathered. Party workers raised slogans as he entered the police station.

A Trinamool Congress supporter said the party workers would remain outside the police station as long as their general secretary was inside for questioning.

Derek O’Brien gets fresh notice

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien was also asked to appear before the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in connection with the case.

O’Brien was scheduled to appear on Monday but did not turn up. Instead, his lawyer submitted a letter seeking seven additional days to appear.

Kolkata Police rejected the request and issued O’Brien a fresh notice directing him to appear at the police station by noon on Wednesday.

Banerjee’s personal assistant, Sumit Roy, has also been asked to appear for questioning on Wednesday.

What happened on Camac Street?

The case relates to an incident on August 27, when officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), accompanied by police personnel, reached Banerjee’s Camac Street office to remove an allegedly illegal billboard installed on the building.

According to the police, Trinamool Congress workers resisted the action. A confrontation followed between the party workers and police personnel, with scuffles reported at the spot.

Three FIRs were subsequently registered at the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station.

What do the FIRs allege?

Police have accused Trinamool Congress workers of allegedly assaulting on-duty police personnel and attempting to outrage the modesty of a female police officer.

Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien and other Trinamool Congress leaders, including Humayun Kabir and Baishwanar Chatterjee, have been named in two of the three FIRs.

Police have so far arrested 14 people in connection with the case.

The investigation is underway.
