Abhishek Banerjee Alleges Political Intimidation by BJP Government in West Bengal

New Delhi/Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has accused the BJP-led government in West Bengal of using state investigative agencies for “political intimidation”, alleging that people associated with his office are being targeted through summons, detentions and intimidation.

In a strongly worded post on X on Thursday, Banerjee claimed that nearly 25 people linked to his office had been summoned or detained by the Special Task Force (STF) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the past few weeks.

Banerjee Alleges Misuse of State Agencies

According to Banerjee, the STF and CID acted without proper legal notice or procedural safeguards while questioning individuals connected to him.

He alleged that those summoned were being pressured to make false statements against him and further claimed that phones were being tapped and family members, including women, were facing harassment and intimidation.

Calling it “political intimidation at its worst”, Banerjee alleged that the BJP government was misusing investigative agencies to target political opponents.

Legal Cases and Security Concerns

The allegations come amid a series of legal proceedings involving the TMC leader.

Recently, the Calcutta High Court directed Banerjee to appear before the CID in connection with an alleged signature forgery case, with which he later complied.

An FIR has also been registered against him at Kolkata’s Kalighat Police Station over allegations that members of his security team travelled dangerously on the footrests of vehicles in his convoy.

The recent developments follow reports of a stone-pelting incident at Banerjee’s residence and an alleged security threat involving an armed individual near Kolkata airport during one of his arrivals.

BJP Rejects Allegations

The BJP has dismissed Banerjee’s accusations, denying any political vendetta.

Party leaders have maintained that law enforcement agencies are carrying out their duties in accordance with the law and investigating alleged cases of corruption and misconduct.

The BJP government has also defended measures such as the recently passed Anti-Goonda Bill, stating that the legislation is intended to curb public disorder and post-election violence while strengthening law enforcement.

The political confrontation marks a further escalation in tensions between the ruling BJP government and the opposition TMC following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
