Activist Refuses to Leave Tower Until Law Is Enforced

In Samana, activist Gurjit Singh Khalsa has been staging a sit-in atop a mobile tower since October 12, 2024. Despite adverse weather and arduous conditions, his protest continues unabated. Food, water, and essential supplies are hoisted up to him using ropes. This unique form of protest has captured the attention of the entire state of Punjab.

Demand for Strict Legislation

Khalsa’s primary demand is the enactment and enforcement of stringent laws to address cases involving the desecration of religious scriptures—specifically, acts of sacrilege against the Guru Granth Sahib. He asserts that mere promises or legislative drafts are insufficient; rather, concrete action on the ground is imperative.

Government Assurances

Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, accompanied by other legislators, visited the site in an attempt to persuade Khalsa to end his protest. He announced that a special session of the Legislative Assembly would be convened on April 13, during which a strict anti-sacrilege law would be passed.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has also stated that the *Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act, 2008* will be amended to further strengthen its provisions. The proposed legislation is expected to include provisions for severe penalties, hefty fines, property confiscation, and the inclusion of offenses committed through digital mediums.

Assurances Rejected

Despite the government’s assurances, Khalsa remains steadfast in his resolve. He has categorically declared that he will not descend from the tower until the law is fully enacted and implemented. His protest, he maintains, will continue until tangible action is taken.
