GMCH-32 Starts Dedicated Vaccination Clinic for Adults and Senior Citizens

There is a lot of awareness about the vaccination of children, but with increasing age, the vaccination required for the elderly is often ignored. To overcome this shortage, a unique Adult and Elderly Vaccination Clinic of the country has been started in the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32) of Chandigarh from today.

Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh Gulab Chand Kataria will formally inaugurate this special clinic today. The clinic is being started in collaboration with the Rotary Club Chandigarh Central and the Department of Community Medicine, GMCH-32. It will be operated in the Geriatric OPD located in B-Block of the hospital.

After children, now focus on vaccinating the elderly

According to health experts, there is widespread awareness about immunization of children in India, but there is very little information and awareness about the essential vaccines that the elderly need due to weakening immunity with age.

Experts say that even common infections can take a serious form in the elderly above 60 years of age, especially those suffering from diabetes, heart disease, asthma, COPD and weakened immune system. In such a situation, timely vaccination can provide protection against many life-threatening diseases.

Advice and vaccination will be available at one place

With the start of this clinic, the elderly will not have to make rounds of different departments. They will get expert advice, counselling and vaccination facilities at one place. Health experts believe that timely vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of severe infections, the need for hospitalization, and complications in the elderly. This will improve their quality of life and reduce the financial burden of treatment on families.

Doctors’ appeal to the elderly to give advice

Doctors have appealed to the people that if they have elderly people above 60 years of age in their family or are suffering from any chronic disease like diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease or lung disease, then take them to this new clinic of GMCH-32 and consult the doctors about the vaccines required for them.

According to health experts, timely vaccination for the elderly, like children, is an important step towards a healthy and safe life.
