6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Afghanistan, Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Chandigarh and J&K

New Delhi: An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck Afghanistan on Saturday evening, with strong tremors felt across Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh and several parts of North India, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

Epicentre and Timing

The NCS, India’s nodal agency for monitoring seismic activity, said the earthquake originated in Afghanistan and measured 6.2 on the Richter scale. The quake struck at 7:04 p.m. IST.

In a post on social media platform X, the agency stated:
“Earthquake of magnitude 6.2, June 27, 19:04:51 IST, Lat: 36.442 N, Long: 70.672 E, Depth: 215 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

Tremors Felt Across North India

The deep-focus earthquake sent seismic waves across northern India, with tremors reported from:

• Delhi-NCR, where residents felt brief shaking
• Jammu and Kashmir, across multiple districts
• Punjab and Chandigarh, where mild tremors were also experienced
• Other parts of North India, which reported light shaking

Residents in several areas reported brief panic, though there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Why Tremors Were Felt in India

Experts note that the earthquake occurred at a depth of around 215 km, allowing seismic waves to travel long distances. This is why tremors were felt not only in Afghanistan but also across neighbouring regions, including India.

Frequent Seismic Activity in the Region

The Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan remains highly seismic and has witnessed multiple quakes in recent months:

• 5.5 magnitude quake in April affecting Islamabad and Peshawar
• 6.1 magnitude quake in April impacting Pakistan-occupied regions
• 5.8 magnitude quake in February felt across Islamabad and Hunza
• 5.9 magnitude tremor also recorded impacting North India

Global Seismic Context

The region has also seen wider seismic activity, including reports of deadly earthquakes in Venezuela. India recently launched Operation Amistad, sending relief and medical aid to support earthquake-hit areas.

While the Afghanistan earthquake triggered widespread tremors across North India, authorities confirmed that the impact remained limited to shaking sensations, with no major damage reported so far.
