Over 3 Tonnes of Illegal Drugs Destroyed in Afghanistan’s Takhar Province

Kabul: Afghan authorities destroyed more than three tonnes of illegal drugs in the northern Takhar province on Wednesday, provincial police officials said.

The contraband, which was publicly burned in the presence of local government officials and residents, included three tonnes of opium, 198 kg of hashish and 175 stimulant tablets, locally known as “Tablet K”.

The drugs had been seized during a series of counter-narcotics operations conducted across Takhar province over the past couple of months.

Afghan Authorities Step Up Counter-Narcotics Operations

Afghanistan’s counter-narcotics police said they would not allow the production or trafficking of illegal drugs in the province. Authorities also warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in producing or trafficking narcotics.

The latest destruction of seized drugs comes amid a broader nationwide campaign by Afghan authorities against the illicit narcotics trade.

On September 20, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior Affairs said counter-narcotics police had arrested 60 people suspected of involvement in the illegal drug trade and seized 29 kg of narcotics during operations across 12 provinces.

The operations were carried out in and around Nimroz, Balkh, Nangarhar, Kapisa, Laghman, Kunduz, Samangan, Parwan, Badakhshan, Khost, Panjshir and Farah.

The ministry said the seizures involved different types of illegal narcotics but did not provide further details about the drugs confiscated or the identities of those arrested.

Earlier Drug Destruction in Takhar

Afghan authorities have intensified efforts against drug traffickers, cultivators and production networks as part of a wider campaign to curb the country’s illicit drug economy.

On August 27, Afghan police also destroyed more than 2.5 tonnes of illicit narcotics in northern Takhar province.

The drugs destroyed at the time included 2,000 kg of opium, 335 kg of hashish and more than 200 kg of methamphetamine, according to provincial police officials.

Authorities have continued to warn that strict action will be taken against individuals involved in the production or trafficking of narcotics in the province.
