Youth in Punjab Returning to Agriculture; Mann Government Transforming Youngsters into Successful Agripreneurs

Punjab Desk: Punjab’s farmers are writing a new chapter in history. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab Government’s farmer-friendly policies and the promotion of modern agricultural technology have changed the landscape of farming in the state.

Today, even young engineers are leaving their high-paying jobs to take up agriculture as a primary profession, earning impressive profits of 12 to 14 lakh per acre using advanced technologies such as polyhouse farming. This is not just the story of one farmer, but the story of a rising agricultural revolution leading towards a ‘Rangla Punjab’.

Under the direction of Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat, the Horticulture Department is actively working to promote crop diversification and increase farmers’ income. By utilizing government schemes, Harbir Singh, a farmer from Saraba village in Ludhiana district, is earning excellent profits through polyhouse cultivation and has become an inspiration for other farmers.

Horticulture Director Shailendra Kaur informed that after completing his degree in Electrical Engineering, Harbir chose agriculture instead of a corporate job. By integrating traditional farming with modern technologies, he has set new benchmarks in the field.

Farmer Harbir Singh says that he received complete guidance and training related to polyhouse farming from the Horticulture Department. Under polyhouse cultivation, he currently grows seedless cucumbers, colored capsicum (bell peppers), melons, potatoes, and fenugreek.

Through this modern farming approach, Harbir is earning an average profit of ₹12 to ₹14 lakh annually. Harbir further shared that in 2014, he shifted from traditional vegetable farming after professional training at the Center of Excellence (Vegetables), Kartarpur.

Through the National Horticulture Mission, he received subsidy support from the Horticulture Department and installed a polyhouse, beginning cultivation of colored capsicum and seedless cucumbers.

Harbir stated that he regularly consulted officials of the Horticulture Department to resolve issues related to farming. According to him, hard work, dedication, deep understanding of farming challenges, and continuous guidance from officials have been the key to his success.

The farmer-friendly schemes of the Punjab Government are proving to be a blessing for farmers. Harbir Singh’s success demonstrates that with the right technology, hard work, and government support under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, prosperity for Punjab’s farmers is within reach.
