Ahmedabad Crime Branch Seizes More MD in Courier Drug Racket, Total Recovery Reaches ₹70 Lakh

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has seized an additional 329.55 grams of mephedrone (MD) during the investigation into a courier-based drug trafficking racket, taking the total recovery in the case to 701.10 grams of the synthetic narcotic valued at ₹70.11 lakh.

The latest seizure was made during the police remand of an accused arrested earlier under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Additional MD Recovered During Search

The accused, Asuram alias Ashokkumar Bhadu (Bishnoi), 32, a resident of Rajasthan’s Balotra district, was initially arrested with 371.55 grams of mephedrone worth approximately ₹37.15 lakh, which falls under the commercial quantity category of the NDPS Act.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed that he had been staying in a rented room at Yamuna Park Society in Adinath Nagar near S.P. Ring Road in Ahmedabad’s Odhav area.

Acting on the information, Crime Branch officials searched the premises in the presence of official witnesses and recovered another 329.55 grams of mephedrone, valued at around ₹32.95 lakh, along with ₹35,000 in cash.

Packaging Material and Equipment Seized

Police also recovered several items suspected to have been used in the packaging and distribution of narcotics, including two digital weighing scales, 239 zip-lock pouches, aluminium foil, envelopes, packaging material, a notebook, bank documents, an ATM card and identity documents.

With the latest recovery, the total value of mephedrone seized in the investigation has reached ₹70.11 lakh, while the combined value of drugs, cash and other seized property stands at ₹70.46 lakh.

Drugs Allegedly Sent Through Courier Network

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Rajian, the accused allegedly sourced the narcotics from Rajasthan and used courier outlets in Ahmedabad’s Bapunagar area to dispatch small consignments.

Police said the drugs were allegedly supplied not only across Gujarat but also to cities such as Bengaluru through courier parcels, exploiting the practical difficulty of screening every shipment.

Investigators also found that the accused allegedly coordinated deliveries and communicated with customers through phone calls and encrypted messaging applications.

Investigation Continues

The Crime Branch is continuing its investigation to trace the source of the narcotics, identify other members of the alleged trafficking network and determine the intended distribution chain.

Officials are also examining the role of courier outlets and other possible interstate links connected to the racket.

Gujarat Intensifies Crackdown on Drug Networks

The latest seizure comes amid an intensified anti-narcotics drive across Gujarat. Just a day earlier, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) busted an interstate tramadol trafficking network and seized over 2.08 lakh Tramadol tablets worth an estimated ₹8.32 crore, arresting a Rajasthan-based suspect allegedly involved in supplying psychotropic drugs across multiple states.

Earlier this month, Ahmedabad’s Naroda Police also dismantled an interstate methamphetamine trafficking network by seizing more than 7 kg of methamphetamine valued at ₹14.16 crore. Investigators said the operation exposed links to a wider trafficking network extending from Nigeria to Jaipur and Mumbai.

According to official state data released recently, Gujarat Police have seized narcotic substances worth over ₹13,600 crore and arrested more than 5,300 accused in over 3,700 NDPS cases during the past five years, reflecting the state’s sustained crackdown on organised drug trafficking.
