AIIMS Bilaspur Gets Approval for 300-Bed Trauma Center and Emergency Block

Bilaspur: The path has been cleared for the construction of a trauma center, trauma ICU, and emergency block at AIIMS Bilaspur. The Finance Committee has granted in-principle approval. The center, with over 300 beds and costing approximately ₹350 crore, will treat critically ill patients. Road accident and fire victims will receive state-of-the-art treatment within the state. The trauma center has been in the pipeline for nearly two years. Health Minister J.P. Nadda reviewed it during his visit to AIIMS Bilaspur in 2025. Now, in-principle approval has been granted.

Modern Facilities for Critically Ill Patients

Following this approval, the process for final financial approval and budget release will proceed. Once the funds are received, the tender process for construction will begin. The proposed trauma block will be equipped with modern medical equipment and advanced facilities.

It will develop a trauma intensive care unit, emergency ward, burn unit, and other specialized treatment facilities.

Pressures on Existing Emergency Services

AIIMS Bilaspur’s emergency OPD sees over 100 patients daily, while it only has capacity for approximately 30. Consequently, the pressure on emergency services is increasing, and the need for an advanced trauma center is becoming more pressing than ever. More than 30 patients are being referred directly to AIIMS Bilaspur each day from Hamirpur and Mandi Medical Colleges. Furthermore, patients are also being referred from TMC for treatment, including those with common complaints like stomach pain, poisoning, and snake bites. According to regulations, patients should receive primary treatment at the district hospital or medical college, and only in critical cases should they be referred to higher healthcare institutions. However, since the opening of AIIMS, referrals from medical colleges have become common. Consequently, critical patients are facing difficulties in receiving timely treatment in emergency services.

Burn Unit and Emergency Care Improvements

Due to the absence of a separate burn unit in the hospital, there is difficulty in treating seriously burnt patients. In many cases, patients have to be sent to other institutions, which increases both time and risk. This problem will be solved to a great extent by including a burn unit in the proposed project. There is also a plan to develop the facility of helipad under the project, so that, serious patients from inaccessible areas can be airlifted and taken to the hospital quickly. This will further strengthen the emergency medical services.
