BJP demands action over AIMIM MLAs’ Vande Mataram row

A political controversy has erupted after BJP leaders demanded action against MLAs of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) for allegedly “insulting” the national song Vande Mataram. The demand follows an incident in the Telangana Assembly where AIMIM legislators reportedly walked out while the song was being played.

The BJP has termed the act as a serious affront to national sentiment, arguing that elected representatives are expected to uphold respect for national symbols.

    BJP calls for strict action

Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly condemned the walkout and urged the Assembly Speaker to take appropriate disciplinary action against the AIMIM MLAs. They described the act as “deeply condemnable” and not merely a political protest.

Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticised the move, stating that walking out during Vande Mataram amounts to a “direct insult to the national song and the spirit of the nation.”

BJP leaders further argued that such actions send a wrong message to the public and undermine constitutional values associated with national identity.

    What happened in the Assembly

The incident took place during proceedings of the Telangana Assembly when Vande Mataram was played as part of official protocol around the Governor’s address. AIMIM MLAs reportedly staged a walkout during the song and returned later after it concluded.

Reports suggest that AIMIM members did not object to other songs played during the session, including the state song and the national anthem, but specifically chose to leave during Vande Mataram, which triggered the controversy.

The move led to immediate protests and sharp reactions from BJP legislators inside and outside the House.

    Political reactions intensify

The BJP accused AIMIM of disrespecting national traditions and questioned its commitment to constitutional values. Party leaders insisted that such behaviour by public representatives should not be tolerated and must invite strict consequences.

On the other hand, AIMIM has historically maintained that its stance on Vande Mataram is based on ideological and religious interpretations, though no detailed clarification was immediately available following the latest incident.

The controversy has once again highlighted the long-standing political divide over the national song and its observance in legislative forums.

    Broader context of recurring disputes

Disputes over Vande Mataram have surfaced repeatedly in Indian politics, often leading to heated debates between parties. BJP leaders typically emphasise compulsory respect for national symbols, while AIMIM and some other groups argue for individual choice in such matters.

Recent similar incidents have also seen BJP accusing AIMIM legislators of insulting national sentiment by walking out during the song, further intensifying political polarisation.

    Situation remains politically charged

With BJP pressing for action and AIMIM yet to formally respond in detail, the issue is likely to remain politically sensitive. The controversy could escalate further if taken up for disciplinary proceedings in the Assembly or used as a broader campaign issue.

For now, the incident has added another layer to the ongoing political tussle between the two parties, with national identity and symbolism once again at the centre of debate.
