Air India Express Pilot Accused of Assaulting SpiceJet Passenger

A SpiceJet passenger has alleged that an Air India Express pilot physically assaulted him at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport Terminal 1 following a dispute over passengers cutting ahead in a queue. The incident has gained widespread attention after the passenger shared photos of his injuries on social media.

 What Happened at the Airport

According to the alleged victim, Ankit Dewan, he and his family were guided to a security lane typically used by staff due to travelling with a baby stroller. While in line, he noticed several people cutting ahead of him. When he confronted them, an off-duty Air India Express pilot, identified as Captain Virender Sejwal, allegedly became confrontational.

Dewan claims that the pilot insulted him asking if he was “anpadh” (uneducated) which escalated into a verbal argument and then a physical assault, leaving him injured and bleeding in front of his seven-year-old daughter.

 Airline’s Response

Air India Express condemned the behaviour and stated that the pilot involved was removed from official duties immediately, pending an internal investigation. The airline emphasized it does not tolerate misconduct and promised appropriate disciplinary action based on inquiry findings.

 Police and Government Reaction

• Delhi Police have said no formal complaint has yet been filed by the passenger, even though the matter came to their notice via social media. They stated once a written complaint is lodged, further legal action will follow.

• The Ministry of Civil Aviation has taken “serious cognizance” of the incident, ordered a formal probe and sought reports from civil aviation security authorities.

 Aftermath and Public Reaction

• Dewan shared that he was pressured to sign a letter agreeing not to pursue the matter further, allegedly under the threat of missing his flight and losing travel costs.

• The incident has sparked outrage on social media and raised questions about civility, airport security enforcement and passenger rights.
