3-day alert for rain and thunderstorms in Punjab and Chandigarh: Monsoon set to arrive this month

An alert has been issued for thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rain in Punjab and Chandigarh over the next three days. Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 and 50 km/h during this period. According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, temperatures have risen by 2.5 degrees compared to the previous day.

Temperatures have now reached near-normal levels. A maximum temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Patiala.

The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls today in the Punjab districts of Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, and Mohali. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is expected in these districts, as well as in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Moga, and Rupnagar.

The monsoon is likely to arrive in Punjab towards the end of this month. According to the Meteorological Centre, the monsoon could make landfall anytime between June 25 and June 30. Among major cities, the monsoon will reach Amritsar first and Bathinda last. In Chandigarh, the monsoon is expected to arrive between June 27 and June 30, with significant monsoon rainfall likely to begin around June 28–29.

Weather Conditions
According to the Meteorological Department, two weather systems are currently active near Punjab. One system has moved beyond Punjab towards Uttar Pradesh, while the other remains over Haryana. Consequently, cloudy skies, strong winds, lightning, and scattered rainfall are expected in several parts of Punjab.

Rainfall Forecast
Surendra Pal, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, stated that rainfall is likely in some parts of Punjab up to June 26 and again between June 29. Heat levels will rise slightly over the next three days, with temperatures potentially increasing by 2 to 3 degrees. During this period, thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and lightning are also expected in several areas. Weather forecast for the next three days:

June 27: No alert issued by the Meteorological Department; the weather will remain dry.
