Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami Airport, 5 Killed and 5 Injured

Miami: Five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway and crashed at Miami International Airport in Florida, authorities said.

The accident took place at around 1:58 p.m. local time on Sunday, according to Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said five people were hospitalised following the crash.

Dramatic footage from the scene showed thick smoke billowing from the aircraft as emergency crews rushed to the airport.

The aircraft was an Amazon Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane that had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA said the Boeing 767-300 overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport at around 2 p.m. Eastern Time.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the aircraft “experienced an incident while attempting to land” and that the company was still gathering information as the situation developed.

The cause of the crash has not yet been established. The FAA said an investigation would be carried out to determine what led to the aircraft leaving the runway.

The crash prompted a major emergency response at Miami International Airport. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said more than 60 emergency units and around 200 firefighters responded to the scene.

Authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Five people killed, five injured in Miami airport crash

Authorities confirmed that five people died in the incident, while another five people were injured and taken to hospital.

The identities of those killed and injured were not immediately provided in the initial reports.

The incident also raised immediate concerns over airport operations as emergency responders dealt with the crash site and secured the affected area.

Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, runway conditions, flight data and other available evidence as part of the probe into the accident.

At this stage, authorities have not announced a definitive cause for the crash.

Another US plane crash kills two children in Fresno

The Miami airport crash came just a day after another fatal aviation accident in the United States.

On Saturday, a small fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft crashed and caught fire on a bluff near the San Joaquin River in Fresno, California, killing two children and injuring two adults.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said first responders found the aircraft on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

There were four people aboard the aircraft. Two children were pronounced dead at the scene, while two adults were taken to hospital in critical condition.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of that crash.

The Fresno incident is separate from the Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport.

Investigation underway into Miami airport plane crash

The investigation into the Amazon cargo plane crash is now underway. Authorities will examine the circumstances surrounding the landing and runway overrun to determine what caused the Boeing 767-300 to crash.

The FAA and other relevant agencies are expected to gather evidence from the aircraft and airport as investigators work to establish the sequence of events.

Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
