Amit Shah to Chair High-Level Meet of Border District SPs on Infiltration Today

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a high-level conference of Superintendents of Police (SPs) from border districts in the national capital on Thursday to review key security challenges, including infiltration, illegal immigration, demographic changes, drone threats and narcotics trafficking.

The meeting comes amid the Centre’s intensified drive against illegal immigration, which it has described as an organised attempt to alter the demographic composition of districts situated along India’s international borders, particularly the India-Bangladesh border.

SPs from border states to present security assessment

Senior police officers from border states and Union Territories, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and the northeastern states, are expected to participate in the conference.

The officers are likely to present ground-level assessments, discuss emerging security challenges and suggest measures to strengthen border management and internal security.

Focus on illegal immigration, demographic changes and drone threats

The conference will be held against the backdrop of the Centre’s decision to constitute a high-level committee to examine demographic changes in various parts of the country and identify factors such as illegal immigration, organised migration and unusual settlement patterns.

Over the past several months, Amit Shah has visited several border districts and directed district administrations to closely monitor illegal immigration and assess its impact on local demographics. He has also instructed officials to identify and remove illegal structures that are suspected of being used as temporary shelters or centres facilitating illegal activities.

The meeting is also expected to review the growing threat posed by drones, particularly those allegedly used to smuggle arms and narcotics across the India-Pakistan border.

Border infrastructure and public welfare also on agenda

Apart from security concerns, the conference is expected to discuss the development and welfare of people living in border districts, recognising their strategic role in safeguarding the country’s frontiers.

The progress of border fencing, especially along vulnerable stretches of the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, is also expected to come up for review as the Centre seeks to strengthen surveillance and improve border infrastructure.
