New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday launched a sharp counterattack in the Lok Sabha after Congress MP KC Venugopal questioned his “morality” over a bill mandating resignation of ministers arrested for more than 30 days.
Responding to Venugopal’s remark that he had not resigned when arrested in Gujarat in 2010, Shah said, “When Congress falsely implicated me in a fabricated case, I had already resigned before being arrested. Even after being released on bail, I did not accept any constitutional position until the court fully acquitted me, noting that the case was politically motivated.”
Amit Shah (@AmitShah) August 20, 2025
Shah asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have always upheld ethical values. “Lal Krishna Advani ji resigned immediately when allegations were made against him. On the other hand, Congress has carried forward the unethical tradition started by Smt. Indira Gandhi ji,” he said.
He also accused the Congress of hypocrisy, recalling how the party once brought an ordinance to protect Lalu Prasad Yadav, which Rahul Gandhi had opposed but is now seen “embracing” him at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. “The public fully understands this duplicity,” Shah added.

The Home Minister defended the three bills introduced earlier in the day—including the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025—saying they would undergo thorough scrutiny before a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). “Yet the INDI alliance, abandoning all shame and decency, opposed the bills in crude fashion to protect the corrupt,” he alleged.
The opposition, Shah said, stood “exposed in front of the public” by resisting measures aimed at strengthening political probity.
