Amit Shah accuses Congress of siphoning Rs 150 crore yearly from Assam health budget

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday alleged that the Indian National Congress misappropriated nearly Rs 150 crore every year from Assam’s healthcare budget during its 15-year rule in the state.

Shah made the remarks while addressing a programme in Guwahati where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for healthcare projects worth Rs 2,092 crore.

Shah criticises Congress over health sector

The Home Minister said the healthcare system in Assam was in poor condition about a decade ago due to corruption and mismanagement during the Congress government.

He alleged that funds meant for improving hospitals and medical infrastructure were diverted for the benefit of political leaders and their families, which weakened the public health system in the state.

BJP governments improving healthcare

Praising Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Shah said the healthcare infrastructure in the state has improved significantly in recent years. He added that medical facilities in Assam are now progressing towards the standards of developed states like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Shah said the new healthcare projects will strengthen medical services and help people, especially those in rural and remote areas, access better treatment without having to travel outside the state.
