New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently instructed the security forces to ensure that Jammu and Kashmir remains free from infiltration.
For Pakistan, apart from the huge embarrassment, a major fallout post Operation Sindoor was its growing difficulty in sending terrorists into India.
Infiltration Attempts Near Zero Amid Tightened Border Security
There is heightened security at the borders, and infiltrations have almost fallen to nil. In October, an infiltration bid was made by two terrorists, but both were neutralised by alert forces at Kupwara.
With infiltrations becoming increasingly difficult, Pakistan is now attempting to disturb the peace and harmony in Jammu and Kashmir through alternative means.
ISI’s Disinformation Campaign and Communal Agenda
Plans are reportedly afoot to create communal tension in Jammu and Kashmir, with the ISI launching a massive disinformation campaign.
The agency has dedicated wings for such operations and has used similar tactics in the past, including during the unrest that followed the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Intelligence agencies are on high alert to track and neutralise fake propaganda designed to incite local populations.
According to officials, the ISI’s current strategy involves reviving issues around the abrogation of Article 370 and spreading misinformation about alleged injustices against the youth. The objective is twofold — to stir unrest and to boost local recruitment for terror activities.
Push for Homegrown Terror Groups After Failed Infiltration Bids
Following the failure of numerous infiltration attempts, the ISI is reportedly pushing for the creation of homegrown terror outfits, composed entirely of local recruits.
This approach allows Pakistan to avoid the risks of cross-border infiltration while portraying terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir as a local uprising.
Intelligence estimates suggest that at least 80 terrorists are waiting across the border to infiltrate through routes in Uri, Kupwara, Guru, Hiranagar, and Sunderbans.
Several infiltration attempts by Pakistan Army commandos, part of the Border Action Team (BAT), have also been foiled along the Line of Control (LoC), particularly in the Poonch sector.
Pakistan’s Frustration Grows Amid Declining Local Recruitment
With local recruitments dropping to almost zero, the Pakistani establishment is reportedly growing increasingly frustrated.
Facing internal pressures from Afghanistan, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Balochistan Nationalist Army (BLA), Islamabad is seeking to divert attention from its domestic challenges.
By running a disinformation campaign and fomenting unrest in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan hopes to create the illusion of instability.
However, with peace gradually returning to the region, tourism flourishing, and businesses thriving, the people of the Union Territory appear to be resisting such efforts — a development that has further irked Pakistan.
