New Delhi: On August 8, 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of the Maa Janaki Temple at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi, Bihar, marking a significant step toward enhancing religious tourism in the region.
The temple, believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita, is set to be developed on a grand scale, drawing inspiration from Ayodhya’s Ram Temple.

The ₹882.87 crore project spans 67 acres and includes a parikrama path, a museum, and modern amenities to facilitate devotees. The ceremony was attended by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, highlighting the project’s importance to the state.
On the same day, Shah also flagged off the Sitamarhi-Delhi Amrit Bharat Train, boosting connectivity for pilgrims and locals alike.
The initiative aims to preserve the cultural and spiritual significance of the site while promoting tourism and economic growth in Sitamarhi, with completion targeted within the next three years.
