Gurdaspur: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday met with the families of those who spoke out against the drug trade in Punjab. He accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of failing to curb the growing drug trade in the state. Shah said that drug traffickers in Punjab are emboldened and even those who speak out against drug abuse are not safe.
Amit Shah meets the family of deceased Bikramjit Singh
During his visit to Punjab, Amit Shah visited the home of the late Bikramjit Singh in Gurdaspur and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He also met with the family of Gulzar Singh, who was allegedly killed in Sangrur for speaking out against local drug traffickers.
Shah posted on the social media platform X, stating that he met and expressed his condolences to the family of Bikramjit Singh, who allegedly lost his life while raising his voice against the rampant drug trade during the AAP government’s tenure in Punjab. He prayed that God give the family the strength to bear this loss.

Targeting the AAP Government
Amit Shah targeted the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government, saying that the growing drug network in the state and the emboldened drug traffickers raise serious questions about the government’s functioning.
He said, “Under the Bhagwant Mann government, on one hand, the youth of Punjab are falling prey to drugs, while on the other hand, those who raise their voice against it are not safe.”
Shah reiterated that the central government is committed to making Punjab, and the entire country, drug-free, and securing the future of the youth.
Family recounts the attack
Bikramjit Singh’s uncle, Gurnam Singh, said about the incident that his nephew had left home for an evening walk. According to him, the incident occurred between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
Gurnam Singh alleged that 10 to 15 drug addicts, along with two other individuals, surrounded Bikramjit Singh. He said the three were taken inside, after which blood was spilled everywhere. According to him, Bikramjit Singh died on the spot, while two others were seriously injured and hospitalized.
He said his nephew worked against drug abuse and had no personal enmity with anyone.
Gurnam Singh said that Amit Shah met with the family and assured them that the case would be investigated by the CBI and they would get justice. He said that the family was happy that the Home Minister visited their home and listened to them.
Family demands CBI investigation and justice
Saroj Deepak, niece of the deceased Bikramjit Singh, also confirmed meeting Amit Shah. She said that the Home Minister assured the family of justice and a drug-free Punjab.
According to Saroj Deepak, the family had demanded a CBI investigation, and Shah said the case would be handed over to the CBI. He stated that he did not know who was responsible for the incident. According to him, the accused were drug users and were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
He demanded that the family receive justice and that Punjab be freed from the drug problem.
Ashwani Sharma also expressed assurance of justice
Former Punjab BJP state president Ashwani Sharma, speaking to news agency ANI, said that Amit Shah met with the bereaved family and listened to their plight. He stated that the Home Minister assured the family of justice and reiterated his commitment to making Punjab drug-free.
Sharma said that those involved in the drug trade would be curbed and the family was assured of justice.
Home Ministry seeks report from Punjab government
Amit Shah’s visit comes at a time when political debate is raging over the drug problem in Punjab. The BJP has consistently accused the AAP government of failing to control the drug trade. Shah had previously alleged that drug smugglers dealing in chitta, a substance commonly used for heroin, in Punjab are flourishing under the AAP government’s protection.
Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry (MHA) has sought a detailed report from the Punjab government regarding the murder of Bikramjit Singh in Gurdaspur and the injuries sustained by Nishan Singh and Gurmukh Singh in an alleged drug-related attack.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, the Home Ministry cited the incident as having occurred in Mari Panwan village, under the jurisdiction of the Sri Hargobindpur police station in Batala tehsil. The ministry has requested a full account of the incident and the actions taken so far from the state government.
