    Amit Shah to Lead Syama Prasad Mookerjee 125th Birth Anniversary Commemoration in Kolkata Today

    New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a special commemorative programme in Kolkata on Monday as part of the nationwide celebrations marking the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

    The event is being organised by the Ministry of Culture in association with the Government of West Bengal at Milan Mela Prangan, as part of the two-year official commemoration announced by the Centre.

    Floral Tributes and Foundation Stone Ceremony

    The day’s programme will begin with Amit Shah and other dignitaries paying floral tributes at Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s residence in Bhawanipore.

    Later, the Home Minister will visit Eco Park to perform the Bhoomi Poojan and lay the foundation stone for a proposed 125-foot statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, which is being developed to honour his contributions to the nation.

    Exhibition on Mookerjee’s Life and Legacy

    A special exhibition showcasing Mookerjee’s life and legacy will also be inaugurated at Milan Mela Prangan.

    The exhibition will feature rare photographs, archival documents and multimedia presentations highlighting his contributions as a statesman, educationist, parliamentarian and nationalist leader. It will also focus on his role in education, democratic institutions and India’s industrial development.

    Cultural Performances and Documentary Screening

    The commemorative programme will include a mass rendition of Vande Mataram, followed by a cultural presentation titled “Sur, Sanskriti evam Rashtra” by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT).

    The performance will feature 57 artists representing Indian classical, folk and traditional music under the direction of Padma Shri Tarun Bhattacharya.

    A short documentary on Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s life and contributions will also be screened, along with the release of a special video showcasing the foundation stone laying ceremony for the proposed statue.

    Two-Year Nationwide Commemoration

    The Government of India launched a two-year nationwide programme in 2025 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

    According to the Ministry of Culture, the initiative aims to preserve and promote Mookerjee’s legacy while inspiring future generations through his contributions to public life, education, national integration and public service.

    The programme is expected to be attended by Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, senior government officials and other dignitaries.
