Amritsar: Amritpal Singh, the Member of Parliament from Khadoor Sahib and chief of Waris Punjab De is scheduled to appear before an Amritsar court on Sunday through video conferencing from Dibrugarh Jail in Assam.

The hearing is related to the 2023 Ajnala police station attack and protest case, which remains one of the most high-profile cases linked to the organisation.

Discharge Petition Filed by Amritpal

During the previous hearing, Amritpal Singh moved a fresh petition seeking discharge from the case. In his plea, he claimed there is insufficient evidence against him and alleged that he has been falsely implicated for political reasons.

The Punjab government is expected to submit its reply before the court during today’s proceedings. Sources indicate that the prosecution is likely to oppose the discharge petition.

Punjab Government Likely to Oppose Plea

Investigating agencies and Punjab Police maintain that the Ajnala incident led to a serious breakdown of law and order. Multiple charges were registered in connection with the protest and alleged violence outside the police station.

The prosecution is expected to argue that sufficient evidence exists to continue proceedings against the accused.

Background of the 2023 Ajnala Incident

In February 2023, supporters of Amritpal Singh gathered outside the Ajnala police station in large numbers to protest the arrest of one of his associates. During the protest, barricades were allegedly broken, and several protesters were seen carrying swords and other weapons.

Following the incident, multiple FIRs were registered by Punjab Police.

Arrest Under NSA and Transfer to Assam Jail

Later in 2023, authorities launched a crackdown against Amritpal Singh and his associates. Acting under the National Security Act (NSA), Punjab Police arrested him and shifted him to Dibrugarh Jail in Assam.

Today’s court hearing is being closely watched, as the Punjab government’s response and the court’s observations on the discharge plea could shape the future legal proceedings in the case.
