Amritpal Singh case hearing in Punjab and Haryana High Court, Demand to keep in Dibrugarh jail

Today, a hearing will take place in the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the case related to the National Security Act (NSA) against Amritpal Singh, the MP from Khadoor Sahib, Punjab. This is because the NSA imposed on Amritpal is set to expire this month. Earlier, the Punjab government had approached the High Court against this. On behalf of the government, a petition was filed arguing that even after the expiration of the NSA period, Amritpal should be kept in Dibrugarh jail. In this case, today Amritpal’s lawyer will present his opinion. After that, several issues will be debated by the government.

The government’s lawyer stated in the petition that the period of Amritpal Singh’s custody under the NSA is ending on April 22. Citing intelligence information and security reasons, the state government informed the court that it does not want to bring him to Punjab. In such a case, there is a concern that if he is brought back to Punjab afterwards, the law-and-order situation in the state could deteriorate.

The government has appealed that after the NSA period ends, the Punjab police should arrest him in Assam and later keep him in Dibrugarh jail in Assam, so that any kind of disorder can be avoided. Since he became an MP, he has not been able to participate in the proceedings of Parliament. After a long struggle, he had taken the oath of becoming a member of Parliament.

A letter has been sent to the Center

The government wants him to be kept in custody in Assam itself and for the case to be heard via video conferencing. Earlier, a similar letter had been written by the Punjab government to the Central Ministry of Home Affairs. It cited reasons of security and maintaining law and order.

According to sources, the state government has requested the Central Home Secretary that with the consent of the Assam government, Amritpal be allowed to be kept in Dibrugarh Jail under the provisions of the Transfer of Prisoners Act, 1952 and the Punjab Amendment Act, 2025. An appeal has also been made to take a decision in this matter promptly.
