Amritpal Singh Moves High Court for Interim Bail to Attend Parliament Winter Session

Khadoor Sahib: Amritpal Singh is lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA). His petition has cited Section 15, which allows parole in special circumstances.

Demand to appear in person in Parliament session

The petition, filed through advocate Iman Singh Khara, said that despite being in preventive custody since April 2023, Amritpal Singh won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib seat by a margin of about four lakh votes and still represents about 19 lakh voters.

He has sought directions to the central and state governments to release him on parole or at least ensure his personal presence during the Parliament session (December 1 to 19).

Detention extended for the third time

According to the petition, the third detention order against him was issued on April 17, 2024, when he was already lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail. The advisory board later found sufficient grounds for his continued detention, and on June 24, the detention period was extended for the third time.

Decision on parole application still undecided

Amritpal Singh had requested parole on November 13 to attend the Parliament session, but no decision has been taken yet.

‘Participating in Parliament is a constitutional obligation’

The MP has argued in his petition that it is his constitutional obligation to participate in the proceedings of Parliament. Therefore, he has sought a timely decision from the court.

He has also requested that the court grant him appropriate relief considering the special circumstances.
