Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has questioned the Punjab government regarding the interim parole application of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh to attend the winter session of Parliament. The court ordered the government to produce the “basic information” on the basis of which Amritpal’s parole petition was rejected.
The state government argued in court that Amritpal Singh’s “single speech could set Punjab’s five rivers ablaze.” Following this argument, the High Court clearly stated that a decision should be based on concrete records, not mere apprehension.
Third detention under the NSA challenged
Amritpal Singh has challenged his third consecutive detention under the National Security Act (NSA) in the High Court. He is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam. The petition states that the third detention order, issued on April 17, 2025, is completely illegal, arbitrary, and a violation of his constitutional rights.
Detention being extended without new grounds
The petition filed on behalf of Amritpal Singh claims that he has been continuously in preventive detention since April 2023. The government is continuously extending his detention by reiterating old allegations without any new facts or basis.
An important hearing will be held today in the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding this entire matter. The court will determine the legal validity of the government’s decisions regarding Amritpal’s detention and interim parole.
