Amritpal Singh Arrested in Ajnala Case After NSA Detention Ends

Amritpal Singh was arrested by the Punjab Police on Thursday in connection with the 2023 Ajnala police station attack case. This action came after his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) ended. He was produced before the Ajnala court via video conferencing from Dibrugarh, where the court granted him two days’ police remand. He will remain in Dibrugarh Central Jail for the time being.

Detained under the NSA since 2023

Amritpal Singh was detained under the NSA and held in Dibrugarh Central Jail since April 23, 2023. Citing security and law and order concerns, the state government had requested the court to keep him in Assam instead of bringing him to Punjab and to conduct the hearing via video conferencing.

Opposition raises questions

Rebel Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali criticized the arrest, calling it an affront to the democratic system. He said that an elected representative was being denied a fair trial.

Claims by lawyers and police

Amritpal’s lawyers, Harpal Singh Khara and Rituraj Singh, argued that the case is already pending in court and that the vehicle being mentioned was not previously mentioned during the investigation. The police maintain that the arrest will now allow the trial in the Ajnala attack case, in which Amritpal is the main accused, to proceed.

Case registered in 2023

The FIR in the Ajnala violence case was filed on February 24, 2023. Charges have been framed against 41 people, including Amritpal Singh.
