High Court to Hear Amritpal Singh’s Challenge to Parole Denial Today

Khadoor Sahib MP and pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh has challenged the Punjab government’s decision to deny him parole to attend the winter session in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His plea will be heard today.

His legal team argues that the MP’s presence in Parliament is necessary to discuss the recent floods in the state and related issues. The winter session runs from December 1 to December 19.

What has happened so far in Amritpal’s parole case?

1. Supreme Court asks him to approach High Court

Amritpal Singh had earlier filed a petition in the Supreme Court, stating that it is his constitutional right to go to Parliament and his presence is necessary to raise issues related to Punjab.

However, the Supreme Court rejected his petition and directed him to appeal to the High Court.

2. High Court seeks government’s response

After this, he approached the High Court in November. During the hearing, the court asked whether Amritpal Singh would speak in Parliament or remain a silent spectator.

The High Court ordered the Punjab government to take a final decision on parole within a week.

3. Government cancels parole based on DC-SSP report

A week later, the Punjab government announced that Amritpal Singh would not be granted parole.

The security report of the DC and SSP said that granting parole could worsen the law and order situation in Parliament and the state.

This decision of the government will now be challenged in the High Court today.

4. Danger of 60 days of absence

As per the rules, if an MP is absent from the House for 60 consecutive days without permission, his membership can be cancelled.

Due to this, the family and legal team are taking the matter seriously.

The Lok Sabha has also formed a special committee to resolve the issue.

His status as an MP will now depend on the outcome of the court hearing and appeal.

Where is Amritpal Singh currently?

Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail (Assam) under the NSA (National Security Act).

In 2024, he contested the election from jail and won from the Khadoor Sahib seat by a margin of about 200,000 votes.
