MP Amritpal Singh Parliament Parole Petition Hearing Today, Government Files Counter Arguments

Amritsar: Parole petition of Punjab’s Khalisabad (Kharur Sahib) MP Amritpal Singh to attend Parliament session will be heard on Tuesday, December 16. The government has presented its counter arguments in the court. Amritpal’s lawyers have presented their arguments.

With only three days left, it is expected that the court will pronounce its verdict today.

Amritpal Singh is in jail despite being elected as an MP

Amritpal Singh became an MP from Kharur Sahib as an independent candidate. He is currently under house arrest in Dibrugarh jail under the NSA (National Security Act) and has not been able to attend a single session. If this continues, his membership may be cancelled. Hence, this application has been filed on his behalf through lawyers.

Discussion on possibility of video conferencing

Amritpal’s lawyers also argued that if possible, he should be connected to Parliament through video conferencing. However, Parliament clarified that there is no such arrangement at present.

MP wants to raise flood issues in Parliament

Amritpal’s lawyers argue that he is an elected MP and has the right to raise issues of his constituency, especially the damage caused by the recent floods, in Parliament. They argue that this is unfair not only to him but also to the people of his constituency.

Government’s counter-arguments

The Punjab government has filed a 5,000-page response in the court, out of which 3,500 pages are the chargesheet in the Harinao case alone. The case has been presented in both Punjabi and English. The government has also detailed the reasons for Amritpal’s imprisonment in the court.

Anandpur Khalsa Force Threats and 15 People Cited

The government cited the Anandpur Khalsa Force (AKF) and 15 people who claim they are facing threats from Amritpal Singh.

Basis on old NSA

Amritpal’s lawyers argue that the case is mainly based on the National Security Act (NSA). The lawyers argued in the court that he has to go to Delhi to attend the session and cannot return to Punjab. They say the government’s arguments on this basis are ridiculous.
