Amritpal Singh Gets Major Relief Ahead of Punjab Polls, Allowed to Video Call Ailing Grandmother

Amritsar: Ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh has received a major reprieve from the Amritsar District Court. Amritpal Singh, who is lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam, will now be able to communicate with his ailing grandmother via video call. The court has granted him permission for a 10-minute video call.

Calls will be possible within 5 days from October 7th

Amritpal Singh’s lawyers filed a petition in the court seeking permission to speak with his grandmother. Hearing the petition on Tuesday, Additional Sessions Judge Barinder Singh issued the order.

As per the court’s directive, Amritpal Singh will be able to communicate with his grandmother via video call once within the next five days, starting October 7th. The call duration will be limited to a maximum of 10 minutes.

Amritpal has been lodged in Dibrugarh Jail since April 2023

Amritpal Singh has been lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam since April 2023. In April 2026, after his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) expired, the Punjab Police formally arrested him from jail in connection with the Ajnala police station violence.

Following the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s directive, he remains in judicial custody in Dibrugarh jail for security reasons. Further legal proceedings in the case are being conducted via video conferencing.

Action taken after the Ajnala violence

The primary case of action against Amritpal Singh relates to the violent incident that occurred at the Ajnala police station in Amritsar on February 23, 2023. During that incident, Amritpal Singh’s supporters broke through police barricades, entered the station, and demanded the release of a detained person. Several policemen were injured in the incident.

Following this, a case was registered against Amritpal Singh and his supporters under various sections, including attempt to murder, rioting, and the Arms Act.

Won the Lok Sabha Election While in Jail

Punjab Police arrested Amritpal Singh from Moga on April 23, 2023, after a massive search operation. He was subsequently booked under the National Security Act (NSA) and sent to Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam.

While in jail, Amritpal Singh contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib constituency and won. In July 2024, he was granted four days’ special parole by the court to take oath as an MP. After taking oath, he was returned to Dibrugarh Jail.

Re-arrested after NSA Expiration

Amritpal Singh’s detention period under the NSA expired in April 2026. Subsequently, Punjab Police re-arrested him from jail in a criminal case related to the Ajnala police station violence.

Pursuant to a High Court order, he has been placed in judicial custody in Dibrugarh Jail for security reasons. Now his legal proceedings in this case are going forward through video conferencing.
