Amritpal Singh’s petition to be heard in High Court; seeks parole to attend Parliament session

The Punjab and Haryana High Court will hear the petition filed by Amritpal Singh, the Member of Parliament from Khadoor Sahib, Punjab, seeking parole to attend the parliamentary session today, December 15. The government has already filed its response in the case. Arguments from both sides are underway. Amritpal’s lawyers have presented their arguments. It is expected that the court may deliver a verdict during today’s hearing, as only three days remain before the session concludes.

    Arguments presented by Amritpal’s lawyers

Amritpal Singh won the election as an independent candidate from Khadoor Sahib. Due to the National Security Act (NSA) being invoked against him, he is currently imprisoned in Dibrugarh jail and has not yet been able to attend any parliamentary sessions. If this continues, his membership could even be revoked. It is for this reason that this application was filed through his lawyers.

Amritpal’s lawyers have even argued that if possible, he should be allowed to participate in Parliament via video conferencing. However, the response filed by Parliament clarifies that no such arrangement currently exists.

Issues to be raised by the people

Amritpal’s lawyers argue that, “he is an elected Member of Parliament and therefore has every right to present his views in Parliament. His constituency suffered significant damage due to recent floods, and he wants to represent the concerns of his constituents in Parliament. However, he is unable to do so. This is not only an injustice to Amritpal Singh but also to the people of his constituency. Therefore, the government should take appropriate steps in this regard.”
