Amritsar ASI Harjeet Singh Shot Dead During Patrol, TTH Claims Attack, ₹2 Crore Aid

Amritsar: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Gate Hakima police station was shot dead while on patrol near Assistant Sub-Inspector in Dana Mandi in Amritsar late Thursday night. ASI Harjit Singh was reportedly patrolling the area on a motorcycle at around 2:30 a.m. when unidentified assailants opened fire at him.

Harjit Singh sustained serious bullet injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Amritsar. He died during treatment. Following the incident, a police team reached the spot and launched an investigation.

The terrorist organisation Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the claim has not yet been independently confirmed by the police.

Two Motorcycle-Borne Assailants Open Fire

Harjit Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, was posted at Gate Hakima police station. Police said he was on duty in the Dana Mandi area between around 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. when two assailants allegedly arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire and fled the scene.

After receiving information about the shooting, police teams reached the spot. Harjit Singh was taken to Amandeep Hospital in critical condition, where doctors began treatment. However, his condition deteriorated and he succumbed to his injuries.

Police took the body into custody and initiated further legal proceedings.

TTH Claims Responsibility for Attack

A claim of responsibility for the attack surfaced on behalf of an organisation calling itself Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan.

A similar claim had earlier been made by the same organisation following the September 11 attack on ASI Jaswant Singh in the Ajnala area of Amritsar. Security agencies are also verifying that claim.

CM Mann Announces Rs 2 Crore Assistance

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed grief over the killing and paid tribute to Harjit Singh for his service.

Mann said the Punjab government would stand firmly with the family of the deceased. As a mark of respect, the government will provide an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 crore, while HDFC Bank will provide a cheque of Rs 1 crore to the family.

Earlier Attacks on Police Personnel in Amritsar

Amritsar has witnessed other incidents targeting police personnel in recent months. A few months ago, ASI Jog Singh was shot dead in the Majitha area.

Later, on the night of September 11, ASI Jaswant Singh was attacked in the Ajnala area but survived. Following the attack, he reportedly reached the police station himself on his motorcycle. TTH had also claimed responsibility for that incident.

Police Examine CCTV Footage

Police teams are now working to identify the attackers and establish the sequence of events. CCTV footage from the area and other technical evidence are being examined as part of the investigation.

The motive behind the attack and the identities of those involved will become clearer as the investigation progresses.
