Encounter Breakthrough in Amritsar Murder Case: Shooter Arrested, Motive Traced to Marital Dispute

Amritsar: The Amritsar Commissionerate Police have initiated a case into the murder that occurred two days ago in Chheharta. Police have detained four people, including the shooter. The main accused was arrested after an encounter, during which he was shot in the leg and admitted to the Civil Hospital.

The incident took place on the morning of November 18, 2025, when Varinder Singh was returning after dropping his children at school. Two criminals on a motorcycle opened fire on him near Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib. Seriously injured, Varinder Singh was rushed to Escorts Fortis Hospital on the Verka Bypass, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Marital dispute led to the attack

Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated that Varinder’s niece, Arshdeep Kaur, was involved in a marital dispute with her husband, Nishan Singh. Arshdeep Kaur had been living with her maternal uncle, a situation that Nishan Singh did not approve of.

CP Bhullar further stated that Nishan Singh, who has a criminal background and currently lives abroad, hired Jobanpreet Singh and Sukhbir Singh—both 22-year-old residents of Gurdaspur—promising to help them settle in Dubai.

During the investigation, police initially arrested Nishan Singh’s brother-in-law, Gurlal Singh, and his wife, Paramjit Kaur. Subsequently, the police also apprehended the main shooter, Jobanpreet Singh alias Joban, along with his accomplice, Sukhbir Singh.

During interrogation, Jobanpreet disclosed that he had hidden the Glock 9mm pistol used in the murder and offered to assist the police in recovering it. However, when officers took him to the location, he suddenly raised the pistol and attempted to fire at Head Constable Gurinder Singh. Fortunately, the bullet missed him. SHO of Chheharta Police Station, Inspector Lovepreet Singh, and his team retaliated, shooting the suspect in the right leg. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, and the Glock 9mm pistol was recovered from the scene.
