Amritsar: Elderly woman chained outside home for 20 days

In Amritsar, a case has come to light where a 75-year-old elderly woman was tied with chains and left outside her house by her son and daughter-in-law for 20 days. Following this incident, the Punjab State Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance and has directed the administration to take strict action.

According to information, some time ago, a social service organization, Just Service Society, had freed this elderly woman from chains and admitted her to a hospital. However, her son and daughter-in-law displayed thuggery, forcibly got her discharged from the hospital, and tied her outside the house again. This elderly woman now weighs only 25 kilos and is not even given food.

The chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women has described this case as serious. The commission has written to the Deputy Commissioner and Police Commissioner of Amritsar, directing immediate investigation and action under the ‘Senior Citizen Act’.

The commission has given clear instructions to the administration. These include immediately taking the elderly woman to a safe place or hospital under the supervision of a senior officer. At the same time, it has been instructed to take strict legal action against the guilty son and daughter-in-law. The commission has also directed that a report of this entire action be submitted via email by April 20, 2026.
