Violent clash outside temple in Amritsar: youths injured, vehicle damaged; SHO orders investigation

Amritsar: Chaos erupted outside the Hanuman Temple on 100-Foot Road in Amritsar following a violent clash between groups of youths. On Saturday night, the ‘Aarti’ (prayer ritual) was underway, and a large number of devotees were present. Amidst this, about a dozen youths arrived and allegedly attacked two or three other young men.

The situation escalated rapidly, leading to a fierce brawl outside the temple premises. Preliminary information suggests the dispute stemmed from an old rivalry. According to eyewitnesses, some of the victims fled inside the temple to save their lives, but the attackers pursued them there. It is alleged that the youths were dragged out and assaulted with iron rods, leaving them critically injured.

Violence outside place of worship raises serious concern

During the incident, an Activa scooter belonging to one of the youths was also targeted and heavily vandalised. The event created an atmosphere of fear and panic among the devotees and locals present. People remarked that such a violent incident occurring outside a religious site is a matter of grave concern.

Pandit Sunil Prasad, who serves at the Hanuman Temple, stated that a dispute arose between two youths riding an Activa and another group. About ten youths followed the pair, surrounded them, and began assaulting them. To save themselves, the two youths retreated into the temple complex. However, when they stepped out a short while later, the group waiting outside beat them severely again.

Temple head witnesses clash, call police

He mentioned that while he was unaware of the exact cause of the dispute, he had heard that the youths had arrived there while already quarrelling among themselves. Upon learning of the incident, the head of the temple committee called the police. Officers arrived at the scene between 10:15 PM and 10:30 PM and initiated an investigation.

SHO states: Investigation is ongoing

Upon receiving information about the incident, the police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. The police are currently investigating the entire matter. Baljinder Singh Aulakh, SHO of the B-Division police station, stated that the investigation is ongoing and full details will be shared with the media soon.
