Amritsar Vigilance Bureau nabs man taking ₹5 lakh bribe on behalf of SHO Chehharta

Under the ongoing anti-corruption campaign in Amritsar, a Vigilance Bureau team on Friday arrested a man red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹5 lakh on behalf of the SHO of Chehharta police station.

According to a Vigilance Bureau spokesperson, the arrested person has been identified as Lalit Arora, a resident of Chehharta, Amritsar. The action was taken based on a complaint filed by a local resident. The accused will be produced in court on Saturday.

According to the complainant, the SHO of Chehharta police station and his team had accused him and his cousin of drug trafficking. The police had also seized their car, claiming that narcotics were recovered from it.

Later, Lalit Arora, an acquaintance of the SHO, contacted the complainant and demanded a bribe of ₹25 Lakh in exchange for changing the allegations to a negative report. The complainant expressed his inability to pay the full amount and was told he could only arrange ₹5 lakh at the moment. Arora agreed to accept this amount as the first installment.

Vigilance laid a trap, accused caught red-handed

A team from the Vigilance Bureau, Amritsar Range, laid a trap and arrested Arora red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh in the presence of two government witnesses. According to a Vigilance spokesperson, a case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and he will be produced in court.

The Vigilance Bureau stated that the Punjab government’s anti-corruption campaign is ongoing, and the public has been urged to immediately report any government official or employee demanding a bribe to the Vigilance helpline.
