Amaravati: A 43-year-old head constable of the Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP) was killed in a suspected hit-and-run incident after an unidentified vehicle struck him while he was on a morning jog on a flyover in Kurnool on Tuesday, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Varaprasad Reddy, who was serving in the Second Battalion of the Andhra Pradesh Special Police.

Policeman Dies After Falling From Flyover

According to police, the incident took place near Bellari Chowrasta on a flyover along the national highway during the early hours of Tuesday.

An unidentified vehicle allegedly hit the head constable while he was jogging. The impact caused him to fall from the flyover onto the road below, where he died on the spot.

Police shifted the body to a government hospital for a post-mortem examination and have launched an investigation to identify the vehicle involved in the suspected hit-and-run.

Home Minister Orders Detailed Investigation

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha expressed grief over the death of the police officer and extended condolences to his family.

She described the incident as a tragic loss, saying the state had lost a dedicated police personnel who had served with commitment. The minister assured the bereaved family of all possible government assistance.

Anitha also directed officials to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident and determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal accident.

Second Police Officer Killed in Road Accident in Three Days

Varaprasad Reddy’s death is the second fatal road accident involving a police officer in Andhra Pradesh within three days.

On July 12, Armed Reserve constable Mariyadas (36) was killed in Ongole in Prakasam district after a speeding car lost control and hit him while he was riding a bicycle on the bypass road.

Following the collision, the car rammed into an autorickshaw carrying garbage and later struck a two-wheeler. Three other people sustained minor injuries in the accident.

The back-to-back incidents have raised concerns over road safety for police personnel and commuters, with investigations underway in both cases.
