Andhra Medico Case: 2 Booked Under BNS Section 110 After Car Rams Scooty, Victim Brain-Dead

Amaravati: Police in Andhra Pradesh’s Rajamahendravaram have booked two men under Section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to commit culpable homicide after they allegedly rammed their car into a two-wheeler, critically injuring a PG medical student at a private mall in the city.

The accused have been identified as Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards. The incident took place on the night of August 3 when the two youths, who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol, rammed their car into a scooty carrying PG medical student K. Priyanka as a pillion rider.

Priyanka, who was pursuing an MD course at GSL Medical College, is currently on a ventilator at a hospital in Hyderabad. Doctors have declared her brain-dead.

Accused Allegedly Rammed Scooty Three Times

East Godavari district Superintendent of Police D. Narasimha Kishore said police registered a case under Section 110 of the BNS after reviewing the circumstances of the incident.

According to the police investigation, the accused allegedly rammed the scooty three times while trying to flee after an altercation with mall staff.

The SP said mall staff had stopped Daswanth and Edwards from entering the premises after allegedly finding them drunk. An argument followed, during which the two men allegedly assaulted mall staff.

When security personnel attempted to stop them, the accused allegedly tried to escape in their car. Police said they drove at high speed and in a rash manner before hitting the scooty at the mall gate.

Priyanka was travelling with her friend Umesh, another PG student at GSL Medical College, when the car allegedly struck their two-wheeler. The accused then fled the scene.

Police Promise Strict Action

Priyanka was taken to a local hospital following the incident. Police received information about the case from the hospital at around 10 p.m.

Based on Umesh’s statement, police registered a case and arrested the two accused.

The SP said the sections of the case were altered to include BNS Section 110 after considering the gravity of the incident. He added that police could invoke more stringent provisions depending on the circumstances and would seek the harshest punishment for those found guilty.

Narasimha Kishore also said there was no political pressure on the police and that the investigation was being conducted impartially on the directions of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Priyanka’s Family Seeks Justice

Earlier, Priyanka’s father Venkatesh met police officials and sought stringent action against those accused.

Speaking to the media, he said the assurances given by the police had cleared his doubts about the investigation. He expressed confidence in the police and judiciary and said the family hoped to receive justice.

The investigation into the incident is continuing, with police examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault at the mall, the subsequent attempt to flee and the collision that left the medico critically injured.
