Anil Ambani files affidavit in Supreme Court, says he will not leave the country without court permission

New Delhi:  Industrialist Anil Ambani filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court of India on Thursday, assuring that he will not leave the country without the court’s permission. This affidavit was filed amid an investigation into an alleged ₹40,000 crore bank fraud case involving Reliance ADAG group companies.

Ambani also stated that he will fully cooperate with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigations.

Oral assurance now legally binding

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi had given an oral assurance to the court on February 4 that Ambani would not travel abroad. Now, with the filing of a written affidavit, this assurance has become legally binding.

The case is being heard on a petition filed by former bureaucrat EAS Sarma, seeking a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into an alleged ₹40,000 crore loan fraud.

Instructions to investigate the role of bank officials as well

Considering the matter as serious, the Supreme Court has also directed investigating agencies to investigate whether the loans were sanctioned with the connivance of bank officials.

ED finds fund diversion and irregularities in loan processing

The ED’s investigation has found signs of fund misappropriation at Reliance Home Finance (RHFL) and Reliance Commercial Finance (RCFL). Between 2017 and 2019, Yes Bank invested ₹2,965 crore in RHFL and ₹2,045 crore in RCFL, which later turned into NPAs.

According to the investigating agency, many loans were approved, with application, approval, and disbursement completed on the same day. In many cases, documents were found to be incomplete or undated. The ED has described this as a “deliberate failure of control.” The investigation is ongoing under Section 5(1) of the PMLA, and orders for attachment of properties have been issued.
