The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a fresh case against industrialist Anil Ambani, Reliance Communications (RCom), and others over an alleged ₹3,750 crore fraud involving the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
The case has been filed based on a complaint from LIC, accusing the company and its management of causing a massive financial loss through alleged fraudulent practices.
According to the CBI, the blame includes criminal conspiracy, cheating, misappropriation of funds, and violations under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The agency has named Anil Ambani, RCom, unknown public servants, and other unidentified individuals in the FIR. The case suggests that multiple parties may have been involved in facilitating the alleged financial irregularities.
Investigators claim that LIC was induced to invest around ₹4,500 crore in non-convertible debentures (NCDs) issued by RCom.
The investment was allegedly made on the basis of misleading information about the company’s financial health, asset cover, and repayment capacity. The CBI alleges that these representations were false and led to significant financial losses for LIC.
The alleged fraudulent transactions resulted in an estimated loss of ₹3,750 crore to LIC.
Officials said the scale of the loss makes it one of the major financial fraud cases currently under investigation involving corporate borrowing and public financial institutions.
The case is based on findings from a forensic audit conducted by BDO India LLP. The audit reportedly uncovered multiple financial irregularities within RCom and its associated entities.
Key findings include:
These findings formed the basis of LIC’s complaint and subsequent CBI action.
This is not the first case involving Anil Ambani and RCom. The group has been under investigation in multiple cases related to alleged bank loan defaults and fund diversion.
Earlier cases involved complaints from banks such as the State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda, with allegations of large-scale financial irregularities and loan mismanagement.
The CBI has begun its investigation and is expected to examine financial records, transaction trails, and the role of individuals involved. Officials indicated that further action, including questioning and searches, may follow as the probe progresses.
The agency will also look into whether public officials played any role in facilitating the alleged fraud.
As of now, there has been no detailed public response from Anil Ambani or Reliance Communications regarding the latest case.
Legal experts note that the case could have significant implications, both legally and financially, given the involvement of a major public sector institution like LIC.
The development once again raises concerns about corporate governance, financial transparency, and the protection of public funds. With LIC being one of India’s largest financial institutions, any loss of this magnitude is seen as a serious matter.
As the investigation unfolds, the case is expected to draw close attention from regulators, investors, and the public, given its scale and implications for India’s financial ecosystem.
