AR Rahman Responds to Backlash Over ‘Communal Bias’ Remark

Mumbai: Music maestro A R Rahman, who has been facing backlash over his remarks on alleged ‘communal’ bias in the Hindi film industry, has shared his side of the story through social media. The Oscar-winning composer took to Instagram and posted a video clarifying that he never intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

In the video, Rahman said that music has always been his way of connecting with people and cultures. Calling India his inspiration, teacher and home, he said his purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music.

‘India Is My Inspiration and My Home’

Addressing the controversy, Rahman said, “Dear friends, music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring a culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain and I hope my sincerity is felt.”

He added that he feels blessed to be an Indian and grateful to work in a space that allows freedom of expression and celebrates multicultural voices.

Reflects on Journey and Bollywood Work Offers

Reflecting on his musical journey, Rahman said his experiences have only strengthened his purpose. He referred to several projects, including Jala presented at the Wave Summit in front of the Prime Minister, collaborations with young Naga musicians, mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, building India’s first multicultural virtual band Secret Mountain, and scoring Ramayana alongside Hans Zimmer.

During a recent interaction with BBC Asian Network, Rahman had spoken about receiving limited work offers in Bollywood. He said that people who are not creative now have the power to make decisions, and added that while it may have been a communal issue, it was never expressed directly to him. He described learning about such decisions through “Chinese whispers” and said he chose to take it positively.

Towards the end of his Instagram video, Rahman expressed gratitude to India and reiterated his commitment to music that honours the past, celebrates the present and inspires the future.
