Lt. Gen. Jennie Carignan new Canadian army chief; first woman to lead the CAF, PM Trudeau announced the appointment

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of Lt. Gen. Jennie Carignan as the first woman to lead the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Carignan. Lieutenant-General Carignan will take over as the chief of defence on July 18th. This appointment is in line with Trudeau’s continuing push to appoint women to the most senior.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of Lt. Gen. Jennie Carignan as the first woman to lead the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Carignan. Lieutenant-General Carignan will take over as the chief of defence on July 18th.

This appointment is in line with Trudeau’s continuing push to appoint women to the most senior jobs. Jennie’s appointment has also been tasked with stamping out ingrained sexism and misconduct in the armed forces.

Jennie Carignan is currently chief of Professional Conduct and Culture and will be promoted to the rank of general, will replace the current chief of the Defence Staff, Gen. Wayne Eyre, who is retiring from the CAF, Trudeau said in a news release on Wednesday.

PM Justin Trudeau Said that “I am confident that, as Canada’s new Chief of the Defence Staff, she will help Canada be stronger, more secure, and ready to tackle global security challenges.”
