Arrival and Lifting of Wheat in Punjab

From April 1st, farmers are bringing and selling their wheat crop in the markets of Punjab. This crop is being sold by the government procurement agencies at the minimum support price. It is also the priority of the farmers of Punjab to sell their crop to the government procurement agencies because payment of the fixed price simplifies the selling process. This time, due to bad weather, the arrival of wheat was slow in the beginning. The wheat grains were affected due to the weather and were also losing their shine. The government has given instructions to procure wheat despite this quality deficiency, hence the procurement is happening at a fast pace.

Punjab farmers deserve praise for the bumper wheat harvest despite the recent bad weather, and the markets are brimming with wheat. The markets are bustling with the golden harvest. Farmers are happy that their crops are procured immediately and paid for as soon as possible. Currently, 61 lakh metric tons of wheat have arrived in Punjab’s markets. The government has announced that 56.97 lakh metric tons of this wheat has been procured. Rs 10,000 crore has been approved as payment. Special trains have also been arranged to transport the crop.

Upon visiting the crop markets, we find that the government has relaxed procurement rules, which has accelerated the pace of wheat procurement in the markets. Lifting is still slow, but it continues. This situation arises every year because the old crop is not completely lifted from central government warehouses, preventing quick space for the new crop. In such a situation, farmers hope that the weather remains inclement and their crops are not damaged.

The Punjab government machinery is actively engaged in wheat procurement. This time, too, arrangements have been made for immediate payment for wheat. As lifting speeds up, Punjab and the nation will be able to secure abundant wheat storage. Despite the vagaries of weather and adverse conditions, the bumper wheat harvest gives the nation confidence that a self-reliant India will be able to maintain its position as a food producer
