AIIMS Says Asaram Does Not Need Hospitalisation, Requires 24-Hour Care; SC Defers Bail Hearing

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday took note of a medical report from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) stating that self-styled godman and rape convict Asaram Bapu does not require hospitalisation but needs round-the-clock assistance from trained caregivers due to his health conditions.

A bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale examined the AIIMS medical board report during the hearing of Asaram’s plea seeking interim bail on medical grounds.

The court observed that while the first part of the report stated that hospitalisation was not required, it also mentioned the need for continuous care. The hearing was later postponed to Thursday after the court was informed that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Rajasthan government, was unavailable.

AIIMS Report Lists Multiple Health Conditions

According to the AIIMS medical board report, Asaram suffers from several health issues, including coronary artery disease, osteoporosis, chronic hyponatremia, thalassemia and recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding episodes.

However, the medical panel concluded that his condition does not require hospital admission and that his treatment can continue with proper medical supervision and assistance from trained caregivers.

The report was submitted after the Supreme Court earlier directed the AIIMS Director to form a specialised medical board to examine Asaram’s health condition and assess whether he required hospitalisation or could be treated through medication and care.

SC Hearing on Medical Bail Plea Deferred

During the previous hearing, the Supreme Court had said it would not consider Asaram’s request for interim bail without an independent medical evaluation.

Asaram’s lawyers had requested a specialised AIIMS medical team to assess his condition, while the Rajasthan government opposed the plea, questioning the medical claims and pointing out that he had travelled to places including Ayodhya and Kashi Vishwanath despite claiming serious health issues.

Asaram is currently serving a life sentence in a 2013 minor rape case. He has challenged the Rajasthan High Court order that upheld his conviction and sentence awarded by a special POCSO court in Jodhpur.

He is also serving another life sentence in a separate sexual assault case involving a woman disciple at his ashram in Gujarat.

The Supreme Court will continue hearing the matter on Thursday.
