Mohali: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was killed after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in Mohali’s Sector 80 on Thursday morning, with police describing the incident as a case of accidental firing.
The deceased has been identified as ASI Onkar Singh, who was deployed as a gunman with retired DGP Arpit Shukla. According to police, he sustained around four to five gunshot wounds from his own firearm at close range.
Family members reached the hospital and mortuary after being informed about the incident. The family said they were told that Onkar Singh had suddenly collapsed while standing and that a gunshot was fired during the incident.
Family Raises Questions Over Multiple Gunshots
Onkar Singh’s wife said he had been under considerable stress and wanted to take leave, but was allegedly unable to get leave. She said he was on leave on Wednesday but was suddenly called for duty following a phone call.
According to his wife, the family was told that the pistol hanging around Onkar Singh’s neck accidentally fired when he fell. She questioned how four to five bullets could have hit him if the firing had occurred only because of a fall.
The family has raised several questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Son Claims Seven to Eight Rounds Were Fired
The deceased’s son, Yadvinder Singh, said he had seen his father’s body as well as a video of the incident. According to him, the video showed the firearm falling to the ground, following which seven to eight rounds were fired.
He also claimed that bullet marks were visible on the terrace. Yadvinder, however, said his father was not facing any kind of personal problem.
Police Say Firearm Went Off Accidentally
Officer Simranjit Singh Shegaril, who reached the spot, said ASI Onkar Singh died after the firearm went off suddenly and described the incident as an accidental death.
He said Onkar Singh was performing sentry duty with a senior officer and that the firearm went off after falling to the ground, resulting in his death.
When asked about the questions raised by the family, the officer said the family had seen the body and that the deceased’s son had also examined it.
