Guwahati: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Friday issued a public advisory asking people to stay away from the Dikhow River in Sivasagar district as the river continues to flow above the danger level amid a severe flood situation.

The warning was issued after the Central Water Commission (CWC) reported that the Dikhow River at Sivasagar remained in the severe flood category on Friday morning, despite showing a slight decline in water levels.

Dikhow River Flowing 1.86 Metres Above Danger Level

According to the CWC, the river was flowing at 94.26 metres at 9 am, which is 1.86 metres above the danger level of 92.40 metres.

Although the water level has started receding, officials said the situation remains serious and residents living near the riverbanks have been advised to remain alert.

“Due to the continuous increase in the water level of River Dikhow at Sivasagar in Sivasagar district of Assam, citizens are advised to stay away from the river,” ASDMA said in its advisory.

Residents Asked to Avoid River Activities

The advisory remained effective from 9 am to 6 pm on Friday, while the district administration and disaster management teams continued monitoring the situation.

Authorities have urged residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to avoid going near the river for:

• Fishing
• Bathing
• Other activities along the riverbank

The CWC noted that the current water level was only 0.09 metres below the previous highest flood level (HFL) of 94.35 metres, recorded on July 2, 2024.

Emergency Teams Monitor Situation

Officials said emergency response teams and district authorities are keeping a close watch on the river’s condition and are prepared to take necessary measures if the water level rises again or fresh rainfall worsens the situation.

People have been advised to follow official instructions, avoid spreading rumours and immediately inform local authorities in case of any flood-related emergency.

The Assam administration continues to monitor flood conditions as monsoon activity remains active in several parts of the state.
