Assam Floods: 10 Dead in 24 Hours, Over 6.53 Lakh People Affected Across 11 Districts

Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation has deteriorated further, with 10 people, including four children, losing their lives in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall death toll from this year’s floods to 41. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 6.53 lakh people have been affected across 11 districts, while relentless rainfall continues to swell major rivers across the state.

Rescue and relief operations have intensified as the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration continue evacuating stranded residents from inundated villages. Hundreds of relief camps have been set up to shelter displaced families, while authorities remain on high alert as several rivers continue to flow above danger levels.

Death toll rises to 41 as flood situation worsens

According to ASDMA, three deaths each were reported from Sivasagar and Jorhat, two from Charaideo, and one each from Dhemaji and Karbi Anglong during the past 24 hours. Six people also remain missing as search operations continue.

The floodwaters have submerged 939 villages spread across 40 revenue circles, severely disrupting transportation, communication and daily life. Sivasagar remains the worst-affected district, with nearly 3.92 lakh people impacted, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat.

Major rivers above danger level; relief operations in full swing

Continuous rainfall has caused the Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries to rise sharply. The Disang River is flowing above its highest flood level at Nanglamuraghat, while the Burhidihing, Dikhou, Dhansiri (South) and Kushiyara rivers are also flowing above danger marks at several locations.

Authorities said the Army, NDRF and SDRF have rescued more than 8,400 people, while 487 relief camps are currently sheltering over 3.13 lakh displaced residents. Food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies are being distributed to flood-hit communities.

Government accelerates relief and restoration work

The Assam government has directed district administrations to expedite rescue, relief and restoration work in the worst-affected regions. Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has instructed officials to ensure timely delivery of relief materials, restore damaged infrastructure and closely monitor vulnerable embankments as rainfall continues across the state.

Weather officials have warned that additional rainfall in parts of Assam could further aggravate the flood situation, prompting authorities to keep emergency response teams on standby. Residents living in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert and follow evacuation advisories issued by local administrations.
