Guwahati/New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Tuesday, with more than 4.45 lakh people affected across six districts, even as rescue and relief operations continued on a war footing. Amid the worsening crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Assam MPs in New Delhi and assured them of the Centre’s full support for relief, rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 4,45,385 people have been affected in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan) districts.

Charaideo Worst-Hit, Hundreds of Villages Remain Underwater

Charaideo is the worst-affected district, with nearly 1.88 lakh people impacted, followed by Sivasagar, where around 1.44 lakh residents have been affected.

Floodwaters have submerged 631 villages under 21 revenue circles, damaging homes, roads, schools and agricultural land. More than 37,139 hectares of cropland have been inundated, while over 2.56 lakh livestock have been affected. Officials said over 26,000 domestic animals have been washed away.

Authorities also reported that 171 houses were completely destroyed and 4,667 houses suffered partial damage. Urban flooding was reported from Chandmari in Guwahati, although no displacement was recorded there.

Relief Operations Intensified Across Flood-Hit Areas

The state government has set up 184 relief camps and distribution centres, sheltering 28,695 displaced people, including 97 pregnant or lactating women and 42 persons with disabilities.

Rescue operations are being carried out by teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and district administrations using 67 boats to evacuate stranded residents.

Among the major rivers, the Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger level, although no river has crossed its highest flood level so far.
