Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has worsened, with the death toll in this year’s monsoon floods rising to 95 after six more people lost their lives in the last 24 hours. More than 1.6 lakh people have been affected across 14 districts, prompting authorities to keep the affected regions on high alert.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the latest fatalities were reported from Biswanath, Sivasagar, Golaghat and Morigaon districts. Rescue and relief operations are continuing in the flood-hit areas.
Sivasagar worst-hit district
Official data showed that Sivasagar remains the worst-affected district with over 57,000 people impacted, followed by Golaghat and Jorhat. Floodwaters have inundated 563 villages, while nearly 16,952 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged.
Relief and rescue operations underway
The state government has set up more than 100 relief camps and relief distribution centres, where thousands of displaced residents have taken shelter. Rescue teams have been using boats to evacuate stranded people and distribute essential supplies, including food and drinking water.
Infrastructure and livestock affected
Floodwaters have damaged roads, embankments and bridges in several districts, disrupting normal life. Thousands of domestic animals have also been affected, with many reportedly washed away in the floods. The Dhansiri River at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger mark, keeping authorities on alert.
Authorities monitor situation
The Assam government and disaster response agencies are closely monitoring the situation as heavy rainfall continues in parts of the state. Officials have urged people living in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and follow advisories issued by the local administration.
