Guwahati: Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on Monday appealed to the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with the administration as several parts of Guwahati are grappling with severe waterlogging following heavy rains.
Normal life affected, roads flooded
The minister said that heavy and sudden rainfall from Sunday evening until late night created flood-like conditions in many areas of the city, severely disrupting normal life.
Many roads were flooded, causing long traffic jams and leaving people stranded for hours.
He said, “Due to the unprecedented rainfall since last evening, many parts of Guwahati have been submerged. The administration is working continuously to bring the situation under control. We appeal to citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate.”
Schools and colleges closed, relief work underway
According to officials, major roads and low-lying areas have been the worst affected, where water levels have risen significantly.
The district administration has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area for a day for safety reasons.
Emergency teams have been deployed, and drain cleaning and drainage work is underway.
Drainage system questions raised again
This incident has once again raised questions about the city’s drainage system, as such situations arise every year during pre-monsoon rains.
Many areas remained submerged even on Monday morning, posing a threat to residents and travelers.
Officials have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution, while the administration is monitoring the situation and efforts are underway to restore normalcy.
