Assam Police raids Pawan Khera’s Delhi residence amid passport controversy involving Himanta Sarma’s wife

New Delhi: Assam Police, along with their Delhi counterparts, raided Congress leader Pawan Khera’s residence in Nizamuddin East on Tuesday morning. The action came after Khera alleged that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma’s wife holds three passports and has business interests worth ₹52,000 crore in the US.

Pawan Khera was not at home at the time as he is currently in Hyderabad, party sources said.

Details of the raid

According to Assam Police Assistant Commissioner of Police Debojit Nath, “A case has been registered at the Crime Branch Police Station in Guwahati. We went looking for Pawan Khera but he was not found. His home was searched, electronic devices were seized, and some incriminating material was recovered, which cannot be released at this time. His current location is unknown, but he will be traced.”

Assam Police withdrew from Khera’s residence around 1 p.m.

Political reaction

Congress Communications Department Chief Jairam Ramesh termed the action a “witch hunt” and said that such police deployment reflects the “unease and nervousness” of the Assam Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Sarma rejected the allegations, warning that Khera would “become Pawan Peda” and would file a defamation case against him.

Background and Electoral Context

The controversy began when Khera made allegations against Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, at a press conference on Sunday. An FIR was filed in the matter on Monday.

Elections in Assam are scheduled for April 9, and counting will take place on May 4, making the controversy politically significant.
