Assam Police Seize Yaba Tablets Worth Rs 3 Crore, Three Drug Smugglers Arrested

Guwahati: Assam Police have busted a major drug trafficking racket in the state’s Sribhumi district, seizing 30,000 Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 3 crore and arresting three alleged smugglers during a special operation.

The successful operation was hailed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who reiterated the state government’s commitment to its ongoing campaign against drug trafficking.

    CM lauds police action

Reacting to the seizure, Sarma praised the Sribhumi Police on social media, highlighting the success of the operation.

“Every shipment has a destination, this one was the police station. Kudos to @sribhumipolice for seizing 30,000 Yaba tablets worth approx β‚Ή3 crore and apprehending three accused,” the Chief Minister said, using the hashtag #AssamAgainstDrugs.

    Investigation underway

According to police, the Yaba tablets were intercepted during a targeted operation in Sribhumi district. Three persons allegedly involved in the smuggling racket were taken into custody, while the entire consignment was seized.

Investigators are now working to determine the source of the narcotics, identify the intended destination of the consignment and uncover the wider network involved in the trafficking of synthetic drugs.

Barak Valley remains a key trafficking corridor

Police officials said the Barak Valley region in southern Assam has long been used as a transit route for narcotics due to its proximity to Manipur and Mizoram.

Drug traffickers frequently use the region to transport illegal substances into and through Assam, prompting law enforcement agencies to increase surveillance and conduct regular anti-narcotics operations.

    What is Yaba?

Yaba, often referred to as the “crazy drug,” is a synthetic narcotic that contains a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine. It is highly addictive and is commonly trafficked across international and interstate borders.

    Assam intensifies anti-drug campaign

Since assuming office in 2021, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government has intensified its crackdown on drug trafficking through coordinated raids, seizures and the destruction of confiscated narcotics.

Police said anti-drug operations will continue across vulnerable districts to dismantle trafficking networks and prevent narcotics from entering the state. The latest seizure adds to a series of major drug busts reported in Assam in recent months.
